Qualitative Research and Critical Accounting (QRCA) Conference & Consortium:
Building a network for QRCA in Latin America
Jointly Organized by
Critical Perspectives on Accounting – Elsevier
GENERAS – Universidade de São Paulo
INTERGES – Universidad Nacional de Colombia
OGA – Federal University of Rio de Janeiro
One of the main objectives of the conference and graduate consortium is to join efforts with local initiatives to promote and stimulate the production of Qualitative Research and Critical Accounting (QRCA), in the Portuguese and Spanish speaking countries of Latin America. Another ambition is to help establish significant bridges between Latin American researchers committed to QRCA, and other international academic communities working on those topics.
The QRCA initiative does not intend to provide magical recipes on how to engage with research and publish it in an academic journal. That being said, it is realistic for participants to expect several potential benefits, among them:
- Raising participants’ awareness that they are not alone in doing qualitative research and that there is a growing community of QRCA researchers in Latin America. The conference may allow participants to extend their network of support.
- Allowing participants to extend their network in the growing community of QRCA researchers in Latin America.
- Exposing participants to in-depth discussions surrounding the evaluation criteria of interpretive and critical research.
- Having the opportunity to present working papers to an audience made up of qualitative researchers, and to receive constructive feedback from this audience.
- Being involved in discussions on challenges and opportunities in publishing QRCA papers in international journals that are receptive to this kind of research.
- Being involved in discussions on how to make research in Latin American settings of interest to an international audience.
In addition, participants will be invited to enroll in a social network platform in order to connect with community members with similar perspectives. Network members may offer feedback on ongoing projects, and be contacted for future collaboration.
Note that the authors of the most promising papers may be invited, informally, to submit their work to Critical Perspectives on Accounting once they have taken into account the comments received at the conference.

Submission Guidelines:
Any scholar or researcher committed to QRCA is invited to submit to the conference – as long as the study is qualitative, reflective of the critical or interpretive paradigm of social research.
- Full Paper Presentations: Authors can submit papers of up to 20,000 words (Microsoft Word file). Fairly advanced papers will be considered. Ph.D. students whose thesis is near completion may also submit a full paper.
- Working Papers: Authors can submit working papers or extended abstracts – up to 5,000 words (Microsoft Word file). The conference organizers expect to receive materials that are not completed but that present a high degree of originality.
- Graduate Consortium: graduate students (Ph.D. and Research Master) can submit a 2,000-word summary of their thesis or dissertation proposal (file in Microsoft Word format), specifying at which stage is their Ph.D. or Master.
Language for submissions: Note that given its international flavor, submissions to the QRCA conference & consortium may be written in Portuguese, Spanish, English, or French. If the paper is accepted, the organizing committee recommends that the slides for the presentation be prepared in English, to increase comments from the international audience. The languages spoken during the conference & consortium will be Portuguese, Spanish, French, and English.
